We currently use the Cisco ASR9000 Series router as an aggregate router within our network. The Router works as expected, however the upgrade process is extremely difficult and cumbersome compared to other products and vendors. In my opinion, the need to upgrade fan trays and firmware on power supplies appears to be the result of a lack of prior planning.

  • The details provided when troubleshooting are great.
  • Robustness and uptime.
  • The need to upgrade firmware on power supplies and other HW Modules
  • The need to upgrade fan trays, etc to support further functionality.

Alternatives Considered
I have similar feelings about the NCS 5500 Series Router. IOS-XR is great, but the need to upgrade components to support newer features seems like a planning oversight. 400G Linecards are great and needed.... but they need all new power supplies? Really? Also, the ability to use lags across multiple linecards would be nice. I'm pretty sure that's not available, but that is more understandable.

Cisco 900 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR), in general, are a solid choice when replacing your existing small business routers if you need the expanded functionality. We have found that need when our network complexity and size warranted it. This solves those issues, which is why we plan to use these throughout the company in the future.

Likelihood to Recommend
If a colleague is looking to not break the bank at their smaller remote sites and doesn't mind losing a few features of the larger (and more expensive) ISR series, then this is the place to start. Cisco 900 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR) can tie a remote site into the network with ease and don't require a huge investment to make it happen.

We primarily use Cisco [900 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR)] as [a] complex demarcation points of networks. These devices also act as a cost-effective solution for providing 10Gbps ports at an access layer operating on the customers' premises. The Cisco [900 Series Integrated Services] Routers provide this with an array of features that can facilitate both basic and more complex deployments.

  • [It has a] pay as you grow model of licensing, but, [in my opinion, is] a pain to implement.

Likelihood to Recommend
No problems with any of the Cisco 900 Series [Integrated Services Routers] (ISR) platform features within the enterprise environment. Because these devices are running a version of IOS-XE as opposed to traditional IOS, some of the more 'basic' configurations can become more complex. In the end, the 900 Series is still able to provide the required functionality, but there is a learning curve.

  • Excellent option for 10Gbps ports at the access layer
  • Option of either SFP/copper ports at purchase
  • Scalable cost based on number of ports required
Alternatives Considered
Cisco Catalyst Switches are technically faster and easier to deploy but don't provide the same flexibility when it comes to 10Gbps services or advanced routing. There are corner cases where having IOS-XE on the 900 series ISRs provides the functionality required for complex applications whereas the Catalyst cannot. Having the option to scale the number of active ports on the 900 series ISR helps in keeping costs at an appropriate level.
