We have several clients utilizing the Cisco Small Business RV Series routers for office security and now, mostly VPN access via the home office. It's been a useful tool after the pandemic hit. We were able to configure and deploy VPN connections with minimal effort and downtime. the main business problem it originally addressed with providing a firewall to the office(s). Now, with the VPN capabilities, it's been a lifesaver for the home office scenario my clients are faced with.
  • VPN Access
  • Several security features provided
  • Competitive prices for SMBs
  • Easy configuration
  • The user interface can be clunky to navigate
  • Better support for vpn access
It's best suited for small offices 10-25 users. Any more and its best to move away to a more higher tier. It will be less appropriate for a mid level company with a large staff. It's best for a small business with a limited budget and less strenuous security functionality.

Used in an organization of up to 30 people. cheap and easy to configure. Gives a lot of VPN channels for such a small device. Small devices, but as an option, they can be mounted in RACK (some models). Which greatly improves the proper installation. External power supply - easy replacement in case of failure
  • A large number of VPN channels.
  • Easy setup port forwarding rules.
  • Web management interface.
  • Easier presentation of event logs.
  • Create groups of objects to manage.
  • No SSTP VPN support.
Works well in smaller organizations.
Eeasy management and installation. In larger networks (over 80 people) the device may slow down.

We have a couple of older Cisco RV series units being used as a firewall and wireless access point for a remote location. It's nice to have the wireless built-in to the firewall because it only requires 1 unit to provide the internet rather than having a separate wireless module to have to manage.
  • It has the typical firewall functions you'd expect in an all in one unit.
  • GUI interface is easier to use by less technical users.
  • The extra features such as VLANs are nice to have.
  • Wireless is slower than a dedicated wireless module.
  • Some of the lower-end Cisco RV models can't handle high traffic load.
  • GUI interface is really slow sometimes.
It's great for an all-in-one device that can be deployed to smaller locations. Some of the lower-end units can't support high-traffic load or a lot of users, so only use those for small offices. It's a cheaper Cisco option compared to their ASA firewalls, plus some of the Cisco RV models include wireless functionality. I think some of the higher-end consumer routers can provide similar functionality at a lower cost, although Cisco RV models include VLAN functionality which most/all consumer routers don't have.

The Cisco Small Business RV340 was the primary WAN router for our network. Having only a single site, it was responsible for routing any outgoing WAN traffic, as well as minimal intranet routing. It was used across the entire organization, with approximately 125 concurrent clients including BYOD clients and desktops. It was brought in not too long ago to deal with a failed router that was six years old.
  • Easy to set up and administer
  • Decent web portal
  • Fairly reliable and responsive support
  • Performance was as advertised
  • VPN functionality is not intuitive
  • Performance tanks when using advanced features
  • Not easily rackable
For a small-business router, the Cisco Small Business RV Series performs about as well as most small businesses would need. When you aren't dealing with too many concurrent clients, the router does exactly what it is supposed to do without any fuss. It can handle a fairly beefy WAN connection if you don't do any filtering/inspection/IPS and it's fairly "set and forget" in that regard. However, if you are thinking of turning on any of the L7 or DPS abilities, expect performance--both on the intranet and WAN sides--to take a hit. The router clearly is not a powerhouse by any means and should be reserved for rather basic functions. While it can definitely handle >100 concurrent clients, it was clearly not designed for it and I would not recommend pushing it.

For this small business we chose to utilize a Cisco Small BusinessRV180W router. We chose it for the combination of VPN capability and wireless access in a small, reliable, cost-effective platform. It hasn't failed us and enables us to get on with our business and not worry about our network infrastructure. We have a remote salesforce that is able to securely access our internal network resources from the road using the secure VPN client. They are able to make use of our file sharing and printing capabilities and it makes their interaction with internal office staff seamless. As a small business we appreciate the ease of setup as well.
  • The built-in VPN capability is the lowest cost way to get a real Cisco business class VPN
  • Wireless isn't the absolute fastest but is very reliable
  • The form factor is nice and compact and doesn't require a rack
  • Power usage is quite good
  • More switchports would be welcome, although this would increase cost and size
  • Faster wireless would improve performance
  • An SPF port would allow uplinking to more business-class switches
I feel that if you need reliability with VPN capabilities, the Cisco Small Business RV Series is tough to beat. The pricing is very competitive. If you plan on building out a larger wireless infrastructure, something like a Ubiquity setup may be more appropriate, although at the cost of more complexity. Firmware updates are quite easy to complete and straightforward as well; a single file is uploaded through the web interface. Other options may include a SonicWall, but costs on those are higher and they require even more expertise that a Ubiquity setup to configure and manage. The Cisco Small Business RV Series is well suited if you want to tell the higher-ups you have a Cisco router in place without busting your budget.

Cisco Small Business RV Series is being used in our edge offices or branches. It resolves our unsecured connection across branch offices. Through this solution, we have applied a highly secured VPN. Our remote workers from each branch do not experience any availability issues or security issues related to peer-to-peer connectivity. So far, we have smooth network connections.
  • It is almost plug and play. Very easy to install
  • The VPN feature is highly recommended.
  • Advanced security features like built-in firewalls, advanced encryption, and authentication
  • I think the price could be improved.
  • More licensing options
  • Faster GUI for the console
I recommend this to small to medium businesses that have connectivity and security requirements. It has complex security features from VPN, firewall, authentication, and encryption. Just be cautious about licensing because it is a little bit complex and confusing. It has good after-sale support though. Overall, rest assured of a great return on investment.

The router was used by our organization to provide a stable connection. Its was being used across the company, although it a smaller company with less than 20 individuals. It addressed the problem of having a stable internet connection in order to stay connected with our data in real time.
  • Stable connection.
  • Good for small business.
  • Nice user interface.
  • Slight lag when switching screens.
  • Configuration is a little slow.
  • Menu structure could be improved.
This router is well suited for smaller organizations, our company had less than 20 people and it seemed to work just fine. There weren't any areas where the connection was limited. It provided benefits like firewall and was fairly straightforward to navigate and setup. However the interface could be cleaned up a little bit.

[It's used] Across the whole organization. They help us manage all our intense network traffic (highly secure, high-performance, reliable connectivity to the Internet, other offices, and employees working remotely) from the heart of your small business network. This proven router provides the performance and security you need to help keep your employees and your business, productive.
  • Manage multiple connections
  • Great management tools
  • Awesome security
  • Price.
  • Complex licensing. One could invest as much time learning their licensing schemes as you would studying for a CCIE.
  • Most GUI software is written in Java and can do a lot of dumb things--specifically the ADSM software used to configure ASA's.
Small to medium organizations should use these routers in order to improve network management and traffic control. Also for security reasons. Great hardware, but sometimes expensive. Licensing is often complex, but when finished, great support. VPN is also a great feature, and other products available make this a great package. Great ROI.
