It's best suited for small offices 10-25 users. Any more and its best to move away to a more higher tier. It will be less appropriate for a mid level company with a large staff. It's best for a small business with a limited budget and less strenuous security functionality.

It's great for an all-in-one device that can be deployed to smaller locations. Some of the lower-end units can't support high-traffic load or a lot of users, so only use those for small offices. It's a cheaper Cisco option compared to their ASA firewalls, plus some of the Cisco RV models include wireless functionality. I think some of the higher-end consumer routers can provide similar functionality at a lower cost, although Cisco RV models include VLAN functionality which most/all consumer routers don't have.

For a small-business router, the Cisco Small Business RV Series performs about as well as most small businesses would need. When you aren't dealing with too many concurrent clients, the router does exactly what it is supposed to do without any fuss. It can handle a fairly beefy WAN connection if you don't do any filtering/inspection/IPS and it's fairly "set and forget" in that regard. However, if you are thinking of turning on any of the L7 or DPS abilities, expect performance--both on the intranet and WAN sides--to take a hit. The router clearly is not a powerhouse by any means and should be reserved for rather basic functions. While it can definitely handle >100 concurrent clients, it was clearly not designed for it and I would not recommend pushing it.

I feel that if you need reliability with VPN capabilities, the Cisco Small Business RV Series is tough to beat. The pricing is very competitive. If you plan on building out a larger wireless infrastructure, something like a Ubiquity setup may be more appropriate, although at the cost of more complexity. Firmware updates are quite easy to complete and straightforward as well; a single file is uploaded through the web interface. Other options may include a SonicWall, but costs on those are higher and they require even more expertise that a Ubiquity setup to configure and manage. The Cisco Small Business RV Series is well suited if you want to tell the higher-ups you have a Cisco router in place without busting your budget.

I recommend this to small to medium businesses that have connectivity and security requirements. It has complex security features from VPN, firewall, authentication, and encryption. Just be cautious about licensing because it is a little bit complex and confusing. It has good after-sale support though. Overall, rest assured of a great return on investment.

It provided benefits like firewall and was fairly straightforward to navigate and setup. However the interface could be cleaned up a little bit.

Small to medium organizations should use these routers in order to improve network management and traffic control. Also for security reasons. Great hardware, but sometimes expensive. Licensing is often complex, but when finished, great support. VPN is also a great feature, and other products available make this a great package. Great ROI.
