We deploy it in all of our offices basically to create this Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN environment. So we get our circuits, we set up Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN, all of our offices are connected. Failover works, it's a pretty good product.
  • The failover mechanism is great between the two circuits. We load balance between the gold and silver circuits. As you know, ISPs go down all the time, so the failover definitely keeps us up. We keep our SLAs for all of our end users and it's great.
  • The interfaces could definitely be a little bit more intuitive for people who don't understand what they're looking at. If you have a level one help desk, things like that, it gets real confusing for them real quick and they typically need to escalate higher to figure out, get time to resolution and things like that.
Any campus deployments where you have more than five offices. I'd say you want a SD-WAN appliance because you want your network to be managed. You want uptime, you want all of everything to be connected. So if you don't have a ton of offices, I mean you don't really need SD-WAN products.

Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN one is part of our network transformation. So we're going from a standard access switch layer, switch to an SD wan. For a lot of reasons we're going into the cloud and we are using it for secure segmentation of traffic. So I mean it's how we're using it is basically like the gold standard. Everybody else uses it pretty much.
  • We are able to use a multiple different circuits to go into the cloud, so we are not relying on just one particular private wireless. We're relying on wine circuits, ethernet, ethernet out. So it provides us that flexibility where we didn't have that before. Provides security that is very robust and flexible and scalable and it provides us with, the biggest thing is redundancy, where we have backup. For example, we have a Starlink for nuclear power plants. If our main circuits go down, we have that. And without Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN it would be very hard to actually achieve, to accomplish true redundancy. So we're happy with Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN in that regard.
  • So one of the frustrating things is that the name changes. This was a company that Cisco bought. We understand that, and everything was managed and whatever. Now everything changed, product line changed, and yet Cisco tax still calls it V managed. Sometimes it's just a little confusing. The name, the name of that. So that's the one thing that I would say. Keep it simple. We have way too many acronyms already that we try to remember in our industry. If you change the whole thing, it's very complicated for a lot of people. So keep it simple.
If you have a large heterogeneous network, this is great. You have a lot of sites, this is great. When it wouldn't be great, it would be for the capabilities of Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN as far as flexibility and as far as multiple vrfs et cetera. That's something that a small site wouldn't really need. So it wouldn't really be for like if you have a lot of small field offices, you could do something else. Not Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN. Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN is a little too complex for that environment.

We deploy SD-WAN across other locations, obviously when we have primary and secondary connections to all our locations for diversity, we use Cisco SD-WAN to manage all the traffic that's funneling through the primary and secondary circuits and we actually use it now for application awareness routing. We just deployed that feature and it's actually allowing us to manage the traffic once one circuit is flapping and actually automatically fails over to the secondary.
  • I will say the ease of use. I know it's very much a template based with feature templates and device templates when deployed properly. I truly believe that the tool can be very, very effective and actually quite robust for us to leverage for globally because we manage a lot of distribution centers and it's all over the world and a different environment in each and every location and obviously across the global markets as well. We've got a wide range of use cases and how it would be very beneficial to each of our business units that we support.
  • I will say the way we use it now, and I think what happened was the way it was deployed, it was fine, but unfortunately over the course of the years we've gotten a little out of hand with our device templates and feature templates. I think if there's any form of feedback that I would give to Cisco is how do we find ways to improve the environment as it stands so we get to a certain point with the environment and then we don't know how to undo it or fix it or optimize the environment. Because right now we're in a position where we're playing a lot of catch up and clean up and if there was a way or some tool or feature that we can take advantage of that would allow us to optimize that environment where we will kind of corner ourselves into a lot of problems in the future. There's some feature or something that we could take advantage of that will allow us to optimize that environment and not let it get out of control pretty easily. That would be my suggestion.
I would say in most office environments they would be very, very useful. The environment that we are in is food and beverage distribution warehouses where environments can change. It's really hot, it's really cold. We've got oversaturation of maybe 30 foot high rack space pallets. Things are where the environment is kind of changing dynamically and it can essentially cause potential problems in the environment, which will in turn allow us to have to make adjustments to how that communication is funneling in and out of that facility.

This awareness route that provides all the connectivity to the best sites.
  • Our architecture topology is massive to having tools. The SD-wan devices per site. One the primary and one the second the backup up. And also the providers are full ancy on the one connection.
  • Maybe we are facing some issues with above on the current one version. Discussing that some interfaces cannot establish no negotiation. So we face that issue and the improvements should be maybe provide a new iOS version to fix this scope.
When the company office is small, it is not needed. When you need to communicate different regions between each other. Have full residency on all to grade, along all the work.

We use Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN for our environment - we seem to have been too dynamic of an environment in the past and that was our biggest problem. e.g. configuring SSID and then provisioning controller would impact all users in the convention center.

SD-WAN is our enterprise technology for connecting all remote branches together. Using troubleshooting tools are biggest concern. Looking forward for to Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN to solve these issues and bring more visibility to issues and the availability of more in depth tools to troubleshoot slowness issues. Integration with ThousandEyes also will be a much needed to add pieces to the puzzle.
  • Easy of use
  • Management of devices
  • Template use
  • GIU interfaces
  • Visibility of entire network path
  • Streamlined dashboards for better information
  • Enhanced tools for troubleshooting path issues
When needed to deploy configs over numerous sites - excellent. We used this to feature when converting from IWAN to SD-WAN. The conversion was smooth and better than expected.

We are service partner, in my organization we deploy it to the financials bancks, the business problems it optimizes the MPLS or internet. My scope are the policies and the optimizations about that.
  • Separate the management configuration of traffic
  • More visibility of the traffic
  • Automatization
  • The configurations policy rules
  • Applications of templates
  • More information about the errors when we applied templates
Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN is better for banks or institutions with double MPLS. I don't see if it's a better option for the Internet.

We migrated from the legacy method of routing into SD-WAN, starting with Viptela then Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN. This helped our company to minimize the onboard of a new branch site and to simplify the day to day Network Engineer operations. Also, due the complexity of our network, integrating and standardizing new network would have been impossible without a solution like Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN.
  • Branch deployments (Zero-touch provisioning)
  • Software upgrades
  • Troubleshooting
  • Dashboards to alerts about potential impacts
  • For companies with presence in China, have alternatives due great China Firewall
  • Integrate manage with vAnalytics... to have a single point of access for both
For very complex networks like ours, with presence in all the regions, Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN was the most mature solution to provide a Enterprise grade. We initially heard from Meraki SD-WAN, but was not well suited for our needs.

We had a lot of connectivity problems in our financial Transactional communication between our DCs because of latency and packet losses. So we started to use in our three DCs using private links and internet to have a full meshed communications between them and solved all the problems that we have. We don't lose transactional communications anymore.
  • Monitoring links
  • Easy operation

  • Netflow observability
We had never had problems with communication between our DCs.

We are completely engulfed in Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN. Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN allows us to not deploy independent firewalls across our ~450 sites, and allows us to manage our devices independently.
  • vManage provides a single organization plane
  • Templates are easy to navigate
  • Central Policy allows us to manage our devices
  • AAR helps us with failing over when we have trouble with our circuits
  • Switching in to CLI more seamlessly
  • We have to preform ugrades/ patches often
  • We have to port hop our 8300s frequently
Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN is well suited in our environment because we have a very large network that cyber security would otherwise have us deploy firewalls at if we were not using Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN. We have standard configs that go out on our devices, and the templates/ central policy is very useful for those. We do have a few issues at larger sites with multiple circuits with AAR/ port hopping.

For me, the automatically implemented load balance between the different Internet providers, as well as the monitoring of the lines themselves are one of the biggest advantages of the Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Infrastructure. Template-based system-wide management also facilitates device configuration and troubleshooting. The configuration of the remote offices is templated and possible changes are easily scaled.
  • Template-based configuration
  • Load-balance between ISPs
  • Overview of the entire WAN infrastructure
  • Renaming the names of the objects
  • Integration with other Cisco SD products
  • Better monitoring
Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN is well suited for a transition from old DMVPN/FlexVPN networks to modern stuff. The more devices you have to manage, the easier and nicer they are to configure. Of course, for small installations, with up to 10-20 routers, it might not make a lot of sense.

With the Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN fabric in our environment, we are really happy with how that simplified WAN network is used for troubleshooting and onboarding new devices and migrating the acquired sites. Cisco SDWAN is more comprehensive compared to other vendors. What we are expecting Cisco should improve the unexpected behavior problems that occur for the customers. With Cisco SDWAN, we no longer need to care about circuit types and public IPs.
  • Share internet IP subnet and no worry about IP
  • Simple to connect the sites
  • Templates made easy to onboard a site in few minutes

Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN infrastructure was used to replace the legacy MPLS WAN of the client global network. My involvement was to design, plan, and implement SD-WAN networks at sites in different regions to be migrated from legacy MPLS, which are costly to be upgraded for better performance and capacity.
  • Automated WAN
  • Allows the client to increase WAN bandwidth without costing too much like legacy MPLS
  • VPN segmentation
  • Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN routers can also connect to other third-party Secure Internet Gateway (SIG) providers such as Zscaler providing secured DIA
  • It was hard to catch up when I first joined the project as SD-WAN concept is different. That would be great if Cisco can introduce SD-WAN concepts better to the network engineers community to enable them to adopt easier.
Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN is well suited in locations where public internet is easily available but from my experience, it was hard to be adopted in regional remote mine sites where there are only legacy mpls connections available without the public internet availability.
