We have been using webMethods Trading Network on top of webMethods Integration Server as our integration platform, which represents our enterprise service broker for all application-to-application (A2A) and business-to-business (B2B) integration at our organization for almost 20 years, and it has been a very successful platform and has provided and continues to provide excellent value to the business.

Things done poorly

webMethods Trading Networks is an excellent choice for a business-to-business (B2B) gateway platform, for sending and receiving messages to/from external trading partner organizations. It excels at making it easy to define new interfaces and provides robust mechanisms for ensuring successful message delivery and processing through automatic retries. We also use it successfully for all our application-to-application (A2A) integration, which many would believe is beyond the scope of what webMethods Trading Network is good for; however, we have made it work and it has been very successful in our organization. I would not recommend using webMethods Trading Network for integration that requires low-latency or high-bandwidth data transfers. It is much better suited to shipping reasonable sized XML or JSON or flat file messages (less than 100 mb) around in situations that do not need sub-second latency. If you have low-latency or high-bandwidth needs, you should use a product more focussed on eventing, such as Kafka, for example.

Transaction visibility provides the ability to query and inspect and audit each transaction and what happened after the fact
Good extensibility mechanisms, which we have used to our advantage to bend trading networks to also serve our application-to-application (A2A) integration needs
Delivery queues let us pause message processing to better manage downstream application/partner outages

We had a shootout between multiple competing products and ended up choosing to implement and use webMethods Trading Network because it was and remains the best-in-class business-to-business (B2B) gateway product. Its pricing was acceptable to us, and we were able to figure out a way to use it to support all our application-to-application (A2A) integration needs also, which drove up the value of the platform for us.

webMethods Trading Network is being used by our whole organization. It allows us to set up our suppliers and distributors as trading network profiles. This allows us to exchange business documents such as EDI, RosettaNet, and CXML with our partners electronically. Transaction search is also helpful to track any document for analysis if needed.
