We normally deploy Cisco Routed Optical Networking for long haul and for Metro rings.
  • Makes use of limited fiber effectively.
  • Allows for the deployment of smart P2P MPLS links that automatically re-route around outages.
  • Simplifies the overhead of managing multiple technologies by converging the technologies.
  • A simplified management platform that provides services without having to invest In multiple products, each with an additional cost. The product should just come with the services and features.
  • Simplifying the BOM selection process. There are to many hidden part numbers you need to know.
The use of Cisco Routed Optical Networking systems on constrained fiber routes is ideal.

Cisco Optical Networking is very useful when it comes to your network management. From designing the network to implementing, integrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting the network, it easily covers all the hassle. Installing upgrades and monitoring becomes very easy and you can perform bulk actions that apply to the complete network in one go.

The problem it solved is that it saved a lot of my time and money which I can now use on my other tasks. My network is Secure, reliable, and scaleable so I can work worry-free on any project.

My scope on this is to scale my network whenever I want and that's the biggest plus for me.
  • Time and cost saving
  • Network security and scalability
  • Network monitoring and easy management
  • Enhanced bandwidth
  • Network automation features can be a very big plus
  • Cost can be a bit better
  • The whole thing can be made a bit more user friendly and a little less complex
  • Some self explanatory functions can be added to assist new users
Based on my experience, I think it's a goldmine for the experienced professional and a hectic job for newbies. I recommend newbies to have some experience and then jump to Cisco Optical Networking so that they can easily understand what they paid for and take the best out of it.

It's best for network scalability so I highly recommend it to those who intend to scale their network in the near future however, if you know that your network will remain the same and you don't require it, there are cheaper options within Cisco.

In my company, we started a new project in which we needed to connect network devices over long distances with the best throughput and no interference. Using Cisco Optical Networking was a recommendation of our hired network specialist. However, we were already considering using Cisco Optical Networking thanks to their five-star quality support in past projects.
  • Good customer support
  • Low complexity
  • Reliable
  • Pricing
  • Update releases
  • Some interoperability issues when connecting to other vendors devices
Cisco Optical Networking devices are the best option when working on projects where you have a well-suited budget and needs a reliable and robust network. In my experience, it is well advised to use it in a network branch where only Cisco products are being used.

I would say Cisco Networking Solutions are less appropriate for low-budget projects where you will need to mix other vendors' solutions in your network branch.

It is used by the infrastructure team to simplify the management of data centers and easy management of the cloud process so you can get more free time for other activities. It is mainly used to connect places where the availability of optical fibers is lower. It is usually managed by multiple teams, but it also includes many services that are run by more than a dozen teams in our organization. We use it to secure our networks, organize network services, and build enterprise-level networks.
  • It is very much useful
  • It has pocket operating system
  • It secured my network
  • The cost of NCS and the new generation is too high compared to its competitors.
  • It has less DCI features
Cisco Networking Dashboard provides a good overview of the current network status. This will help you ensure that your customers have abnormal behavior at any time. Like last night, the backup is very slow. Allowing you to see the time after a problem, you can find the cause of the problem because the cause of the problem is on the network.

The Cisco Optical Networking components are very powerful with unique capabilities on easy and effective networks creation and management of multiple data and reliable performance easy management. The ability to secure for the company and reporting tools are quite excellent and the alerts functionalities keep the user updated and easy network usage management.
  • Easy tool on quick reporting.
  • Ability to keep the user alert.
  • Great tool for multiple data management.
  • The system requires a professional on manipulation.
  • Data flow management to non- IT users.
  • Multiple network traffic management.
Powerful network channel and effective to transport a huge amount of complex information across the entire organization securely and faster. The planning tools are functional, easy to manage multiple connections, and the distribution capability of various network channels is effective and productive. The reports are clear and helpful and a great problem management tool.

We use it to secure our network, orchestrate network services, [and] build networks for enterprise-level (scalable).
  • Secure my network
  • Orchestrate network services
  • Build my network for mass scale
  • Need to have advanced Data Center Interconnect Solutions
  • More features in DCI would be an advantage
I like that Cisco, along with tracking developments in this space, is bringing to market a flexible solution called Secure Key Integration Protocol (SKIP). Cisco CEM technology is great.

[The] Cisco Optical Networking equipment we use are usually related to DWDM. It is used mostly to connect sites when fiber availability is low. It is usually managed by a couple of teams, but it covers many services managed by more than a dozen teams in our organization. It helps us reduce the cost of fiber installs.
  • Convergence of IP and optical networking
  • Port scalability especially using 400G ports
  • Packet optical solution
  • Bugs on software IOS XR
  • Migration from legacy gears
  • Cost of NCS and new gen is too steep compared to competitors
Cisco Optical Networking solutions typically does well in long-range DWDM installs, and with recent improvements with IP/Optical convergence, it might be a good solution for EVPN leaf-spine architecture. We think it is not appropriate for edge installs which require mux and demux, as it is not very cost-effective.
